Match Report: Herefordshire 28 – 12 Wiltshire (05/11/23)

A new era dawned on 5th November as Herefordshire welcomed Wiltshire to their new home at Leominster IBC. On the back of two away wins, The Bulls were keen to continue their 100% winning record for the season whilst also looking to complete the double over their opponents.

The first session saw a win and a loss in the singles whilst the pairs both took victory, including a fantastic and slightly nerve wracking final bowl from Peter Wright to win 11-10, having gone into the final end alongside partner Claire Herbert with the score at 10-10.

The second session saw the triples narrowly miss out on victory, with Wiltshire gaining momentum over the course of both matches to finish strongly and take the win. It was a different story in the fours with the rink of David Millington Jones, Kate Williams, Bryan Watkins & John Mills picking up a 15-5 win whilst Linda Lewis, Shirley Cox, Sophie Heather-Warner & Becci Cox stormed to a 30-4 win, putting them in an incredibly strong position for the bonus going into the afternoon, with Herefordshire 10-6 up overall.

The third session of the day saw Herefordshire take control of the match with Joe Loveys claiming his second victory of the day to secure the bonus points in the singles following Tony Vitale’s narrow defeat. It was a similar story in the pairs as Dave Watkins & Ian Roe continued their impressive start to the season whilst Herbert and Wright battled hard but fell just short in a close run game as Herefordshire took the bonus points for the disciplines.

The Bulls went into the final session 18-10 up, needing three points for victory. The triples produced two strong performances, with Dave Rush, Jill Howells & Jim Knowles taking a 16-6 victory whilst Dean Rudman, Merion Attwood & Steve Kite fought back from a 10-4 deficit to draw 12-12, enough to also split the bonus point and guarentee Herefordshire overall victory. The fours both won their games in impressive fashion to not only take the bonus but also secure a perfect 10 point day in the discipline.

Congratulations and thanks goes to everyone who played as well as our two debuting umpires Ian Roe and Steve Kite who did a brilliant job throughout the day!
