Ross Bowling Club was formed in 1920 as an outdoor flat green club and is now the
club with the largest outdoor and indoor membership in Herefordshire. During the
mid nineteen eighties Short Mat Bowling was introduced to the members as a social
event once a week.
In 1995 Ross were invited to join the recently formed Herefordshire
and Gloucestershire League. In the first year seven members won in the County finals
to qualify for the National Championships at Birmingham. Since then many Ross players
have been successful in the County Championships and have represented Herefordshire
in the ESMBA National Finals on a regular basis.
The club joined the HSMBA Winter League and just two years later won both the League
and the LEH Team of Ten Trophy (for clubs in Herefordshire & Gloucestershire). We
have continued from this strong start to win four further Winter League titles and
have also won the LEH Trophy five times and the more recently introduced Summer League
twice. We currently run 3 Winter League teams and 2 Summer League teams and regularly
supply players for the County Premier and ‘A’ Teams.
Since 1990 the entire club premises have been rebuilt and in 2005 a multipurpose
function room was added which was large enough to take five short mats (we routinely
use four) and provide a viewing area complete with a bar. The club regularly hosts
county championships and national qualifiers.
During the winter season (October to March), pairs and triples leagues run on two
afternoons and one evening a week in which up to fifty members participate. A singles
tournament closes the season. A social evening runs on Wednesday evenings from October
to March which provides an ideal opportunity for prospective members to have a drink,
mingle with members and see what the game and the club have to offer.
